Wayne falls to St. Xavier in district final
DAYTON — St. Xavier used a 14-point scoring run spanning parts of the second and third quarters to take control and top Wayne 46-40 in a Division I district final on Saturday, March 13, at UD Arena.
Guard Travis Trice led Wayne with 12 points, but the Warriors dug a hole when St. X went on the 14-point run to make it 30-23 with 5:13 left in the third quarter. A Trice free throw with 4:55 left in the quarter ended nearly seven minutes without a point.
Wayne (20-3), which finished the regular season No. 1 in the DDN area D-I ratings, then got six straight points, underlined by an alley-oop dunk finished by forward Markus Crider, but St. Xavier (13-10) continued to pull away as Wayne inched closer.
Halftime: Travis Trice scored 11 first-half points for Wayne, but St. Xavier got two baskets in three seconds to help send the Division I district final into halftime tied 23-23 at UD Arena.
There have been four ties and two lead changes in the tight game.
A 3-pointer by Wayne sophomore Keith Clements gave the Warriors a 23-16 lead with 3:49 left and completed an 8-0 Wayne run. But St. X got a 3-pointer from Luke Massa, a basket and a foul by Alex Longi and a put-back by Massa of Longi’s missed free throw to tie the game with 2:31 left in the first half.
Brandon Polking leads St. X with seven points.
Wayne is playing its second straight game without Xavier Jones and Isiah Boddie, transfers who were ruled ineligible by the Ohio High School Athletic Association this week. Jones and Boddie are sitting in the fight row of the stands in their warm-up jackets and uniform shorts.

i live in cincy and if st x is close late in game, they will win. wayne better put them away when and if they get the chance, x is well coached and fundamentally sound. they do not make alot of mistakes and they make their free throws

Congrats St. X. You managed to beat our ‘B’ team. As the article said, both Jones and Boddie were ineligible to play after being ruled eligible all season by OHSAA. Wayne would have wiped the floor with your boys had OSHAA and the Northmont coach not been complete a$$holes!

The critics of the Warriors will amount to jack squat, so shut your yappers! Minton and Trice did nothing wrong. The kid from Gary, Indiana actually did live in Huber… in a van down by the river!

Wayne was short 2 players and still only lost by 4, typical of ohsaa to come up withthis at tournament time, St. X will get blown out by any Dayton team…

OHSAA didn’t lose the game for Wayne, Coach Trice did. You can’t tell me he didn’t know anything about the two players transfer status. If you think he didn’t know everything I’ve got some ocean front property in Huber I’ll sell you real cheap.

Its sad to see such a great team full of talent have to call it quits so soon because of a snitch and a few papers. Its a fact of life, you win things and people get jealous. Wayne is a prime example. Having fallen to Wayne twice, Northmont coaching staff felt the need to sabotage one of the most talented groups representing the area. Boddie and Jones were wrongfully punished. For everyone who thinks theyre just hilarious with their jokes about those players living in a van, youre incredibly ignorant to the situation. Both players worked amazingly hard to get a chance to play for a school that could get them some recognition. All i have to say is that i feel sorry for Northmont in the 2010-2011 season. They dont have a clue whats headed their way.

UD ‘99 - - I don’t believe that youe are a graduate of UD. You may have started there, but were probably kicked out for lack of brains. You are accusing the young men on Wayne’s basketball of being cheaters, but like all the other jealous types, you did not submit the proof.

Jo Jo - - You are just like all the other “know it alls,” and you say that a coach should know when someone submits false information. If you are so qualified to be a coach, why don’t you apply. You could probably not stand being informed that you are short in the qualifications department.
