The following is a release:
HOPKINSVILLE, KY - COLUMBIA 300 is pleased to announce Eric Sacks as the 2012 John Jowdy Scholarship recipient. Eric is a recent high school graduate from Vandalia, Ohio where he attended Butler High School. The son of Ellen and Steve Sacks, Eric was selected as the 2012 award recipient because of his hard work ethic, strong bowling ability, and his perseverance.
Eric has been committed to academics and bowling throughout his high school career. He boasts a 4.02 grade point average, on a 4.0 scale, and is a member of the National Honor Society. As a result of his dedication to academics and his commitment to Advanced Placement courses, Eric was awarded the State of Ohio Board of Education Award of Merit. Additionally, he was named to the Greater Western Ohio Conference All-Academic Team in 2012 and was recognized as the Academic All-Ohio Bowler by the Ohio High School Bowling Coaches Association in 2011 and 2012.
On the lanes, Eric works many hours every week to perfect his craft. His hard work has resulted in the awarding of the 2012 Greater Dayton USBC Youth Kurt Gostel Senior Scholarship and the Bill DeHaven Scholarship in 2009 and 2011. He was recognized by his high school bowling team with a varsity letter each of the four years he was a member of the Butler High School team. Additionally, Eric was earned the following bowling-related awards:
• Named to the 2011-2012 Bowler’s Journal “Top High School Prospects” list
• Named 2011-2012 Southwest District Senior Male Bowler of the Year by the Ohio High School Bowling Coaches Association
• Named to the 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 Greater Western Ohio Conference 1st Team
• Named 2011 Greater Western Ohio Conference North Athlete of the Year
• Named 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 Butler High School Boys Bowling MVP
In 2004, Eric was the recipient of the Wright Patterson Air Force Base Young Heroes Award. This award is given to young people who are fighting serious, sometimes terminal diseases. Eric was diagnosed with a form of Cancer called Ewing’s Sarcoma when he was eight years old. In his John Jowdy Scholarship application, Eric talked about this experience in fighting the disease and how the experience shaped his personality and his “never quit” attitude.
When asked to comment on being awarded the 2012 John Jowdy Scholarship, Eric stated, “Receiving the John Jowdy Scholarship is a tremendous honor. Mr. Jowdy’s influence on all aspects of our sport is truly amazing. I am very humbled to be given this award”.
In the Fall of 2012, Eric will attend Florida State University. He was recruited by several schools, however he selected this school not only for its bowling program but also because of the strong reputation of its business school.
