Brown Street restaurant closes
DAYTON — The Moe’s Southwest Grill at 1120 Brown St. near the University of Dayton campus has closed.
Lauren McGowen, public relations manager for the parent company of the Moe’s Southwest Grill restaurant chain, said in an email that local owner Jason Godfrey “has closed the location at 1120 Brown Street to focus his efforts on his other location at 2495 Commons Blvd. in Beavercreek.”
A reader noted that a sign on the restaurant’s door says the location is “temporarily” closed, and its phone number is also “temporarily disconnected,” but there appears to be no plan to reopen as Moe’s.

Our family really liked Moe’s, but mostly just ate there when we had a buy one, get one free coupon. I was going to go there Thursday night, but decided to wait a day and went on Friday only to discover it was closed. Beavercreek is a bit too far for me….sorry to hear of it closing.

We ate once at the Moes in Beavercreek when it was fairly new. Tasted like luke warm mall court food. Never went back. Chipotle gets our business.

Taqueria Mixteca is awesome! Their seafood cocktail is unbelievable!! They are really friendly too. Great Authentic Mex food that is reasonably priced.

I like Moe’s and Chipotle but my favorite on Brown is Bargo’s. It’s beside Skyline but the entrance is in the back by the parking lot. Great bar food especially for lunch.

I totally love Moe’s - so much in fact that I need to go at least once a week to get my Moe’s “fix”. I will visit Beavercreek more often to make sure that one stays busy, and urge everyone else to do the same!!!

Ate at Moe’s once. The service was poor, the food had no flavor, and I didn’t like their menu structure. I’ve heard great things about the place on E. 3rd, but haven’t been there. Love Chipotle. Friendly service, consistently good food, and great blended Margaritas. McDonald’s completely divested from Chipotle in 2006.

Moes was awful and Chipotle isn’t much better. when a restaurant can’t make it on Brown Street you know it’s bad. Close it down and stick Ruts or a Shields BBQ there1 Obama! Obama!

I have to agree with all the others about Taqueria Mixteca. As long as they are in business, I’m not going to cry over some chain burrito joint going out of business (although I do feel sorry for those that may have lost their jobs). And I thought the whole “Welcome to Moe’s” thing was corny.

Chiptole is way better than Moes. Moes was just trying to jock Chiptole’s style! Glad to see it close, more business for Chiptole!

Never ate at Moe’s but I would like to say something about Chipotle. I think their portion control, or lack thereof, hurts them. I took the daughter there for dinner and she and I ordered two of the same. The different in the size of the burrito’s was amazing. When the check out gal asked what we had I said “they are the same burrito but you would never know it by looking at them wrapped”. My pointing that out seemed to push this girl over the edge. I’ll never be back to the one on 48/Stroop.

I have had Moe’s on Brown once and I really like it, I prefer the one in Beavercreek though. I am tired of Chipotle, its nothing but wrap and rice. Hot Head Burritos I still have yet to try.

I like the option of having fresh cilantro and jalapenos added. You won’t get that at Chipotle. Plus, Moe’s Queso kicks the you know what out of Chipotle’s guacamole. Looks like I’ll have to drive to the ‘creek. Oh wait, can’t he get a bailout from the government. Won’t The Mesiah pay his bills now. I forgot, he’s a small business owner……..

Can’t believe we haven’t had a redneck on here yet saying the closing was a function of the smoking ban.

I will also recommend Taqueria Mixteca. Try the El Pastor Taco. Fantastic, authentic and cheap.

I liked Moe’s and would have gone more, but three separate times when I tried to stop in for dinner after work they were closed earlier than their posted closing time. Plus they locked that back door at night and there is no sidewalk on their side of the building. You had to park in back, trudge through snow or wet grass around to the front… only to find out they had closed early and locked the front door too. At like 7:30 one day. They put themselves out of business.

Moe’s is the best! They don’t charge for chips and you can have all the salsa you want. Chipotle has veiny scrappy meat a limited selection. Hothead is just a cheap imitation of chipotle, not very original. I really miss Baja Fresh! They were yummy…

The chains have nothing on the small authentic places. Another good one is Taco Loco on Spinning and Kemp in front of McGuffey’s.

I liked Moe’s for the tofu. I haven’t been too impressed with their service or their food lately. Oh well. I don’t live in that area anymore anyway.

I’m sad to see Moe’s go, but it’s failure is part of a bigger phenomenon on Brown Street. The location is great and market is greatly underutilized, but all of the food is exactly the same. There were already two Mexican places(taco bell and Chipotle) and you could eat a sandwich from a different place for an entire week. More variety, along with retail and a drug store are a necessity.

There’s not much but restaurants along Brown St. The message is clear: Eat kids! Eat!

I second Taqueria Mixteca. I love that place - make sure to try the grilled camarones. They rock.

We’ve been to this Moe’s a couple of times, and the last time we were going to eat there we ended up leaving because the place just isn’t that clean. The food prep area was messy, the dining room was always dirty when we were there, and the folks working there didn’t really seem to be too concerned about it. The food was decent, but I won’t eat anywhere I won’t sit.

Hey Joe, thanks for letting us know about Taqueria Mixteca. Finally, a REAL Taco Stand in Dayton. I can finally stop having to drive all the way down to Fairfield to get my taco fix at Taqueria Mercado.

Moe’s vs. Chipotle can be debated for hours. The main reason for failure is the location on Brown St. was further away from the students. Chipotle simply out positioned Moe’s. Also Chipotle had been on the street for five years first and owns the UD business.

One “moe” bites the dust, nuk nuk! No comparison to the breakfast burittos at McDonalds! Low carbs and great taste! And no hairs!

I went there a few times and while it wasn’t bad… it also wasn’t good. The last time I was there I found a long hair in my food and it wasn’t my hair. When I took it to the register they did nothing about it and acted like it was no big deal. Haven’t been back since.

Taqueria Mixteca beats them all! Great, great food that is low priced. East 3rd isn’t as bad as everyone says. This food is worth it! Brown street has to many sandwich/lunch places anyway.

When I was on assignment in Atlanta a few years ago, we headed to Moe’s nearly every day for about three weeks. I enjoyed the food there a lot. So when the Brown Street Moe’s opened, I took my wife there and while the food was OK, it wasn’t the same. It didn’t have the same menu, and I haven’t been back since. Guess other people didn’t go back either.

I’m not into burritos, but I gave Moe’s a try. It was okay the first couple times. The last time I went there, they were out of vegetables so they had nothing to put on the burritos! This was about a year ago and I never went back. I agree there is almost too much competition on Brown Street now - but that’s a good thing!

Yes Chipotle is nice if you like eating a tortilla shell filled with rice. Moes had better prices and actually didn’t stuff their burritos full of fillers. Also Chipotle’s parent company was McDonalds…. Moe’s > Chipotle

Thats a shame. Moe’s was really good and was better then the overrated Chipotle. Just needed some more dinner customers. Have to make some trips out to Beavercreek.

There is no comparison, Chipotle blows Moe’s away. Moe’s is at the bottom of the burrito chain. I live S.C. where there are zero Chipotle’s and hundreds of Moe’s, went there once and will never go back.

Chipotle has good burritos, but not much more. Moe’s has a much larger selection, and is just as good, if not better then Chipotle.

Never tried Moe’s. One reason: Chipotle.
