Recession may be helping some restaurants

Check out this Investor’s Business Daily story entitled “Restaurants Get Some Lift Despite Soft Environment” that suggests diners who are “trading down” are providing a boost for some restaurants.

Here’s an excerpt:

People who would be going to more expensive, full-service restaurants are opting to save a few dollars and eat at places such as Buffalo Wild Wings, Chipotle Mexican Grill or McDonald’s. All three of those companies surprised Wall Street with their quarterly results.

That’s “surprised” as in “surprised in a good way.”

Could it be … could it be that the economy has hit bottom and are beginning a long, slow climb out of the hole?

Many restaurant owners — and their employees — sure hope so.

Some of the locally owned Mexican restaurants have great deals and freshly made. Check out El Toro or Burrito King.

BW-3’s is way overrated and theres is no value what so ever on there menu. Milano’s is also the same mediocre food and lousy prices. What a coincidence there owned by the same people. I have been to each probably 7+ times but after I got grey chicken (yes the color grey)on my $8 salad at Milano’s no more. Too many other locals to spend my money at.

Chipotle, no bueno! Try a run for the border, Taco Bell el grando!

I agree, support local. Like Noemi’s in B’creek, Hasty Tasty, Buckhorns, Thai9, Frickers, Roosters. Going to a chain, try Subway’s $5 footlong.

Stay local! Though BW-3 is a franchise and is locally owned, it’s still a chain. Most of the places I’ve been visiting lately are local… Barnsider… Thai9… Frickers… Los Reyes… The local family owned restaurants are so much better than the chains.

Chipotle is over rated. Go to Hot Head, it’s better, and it’s locally owned. The one in Huber will even deliver at night if you want. “B-Dubs” is a horrendous rip off. Frickers has bigger wings for the same price and better sauces as well. Also, more of a locally owned restaurant than BW3’s is.

For me it’s the Barnsider. Still a great value in fine dining, with consistent, delicious food in a quiet atmosphere.

I agree with Patty, support the local chains: Cadillac Jacks has a great full menu…I go to the one in Kettering on Smithville. Also Fricker’s on Woodman is a great locally owned eatery if you want wings. Both places are fun and offer great food and service. Please, let’s keep the $ here in Dayton folks!

I’ll support whomever provides the best “value for the buck.” (BWW, on occasion, gets my business for Thursday 50-cent boneless night).

BW’s food isn’t worth two cents. I have a nephew who worked there and he encoruaged me to visit. I tried wings, burgers, ribs, pulled pork and salads on various visits and found nothing worth eating. I am guessing a starving dog would turn up his nose at it.

Rusty, you’ve got to be kidding me about not liking Chipotle. There’s a reason there’s always a line stretched out the door at all of their restuarants, and it’s not because of slow service.

This makes sense. Now instead of hitting up the more expensive places I’ll opt for a quick B-Dubs visit (their food can only be tolerated so much though). Chipotle is a surprise though, their food is crap in any economy. McDonalds is cashing in on their $3.33 deals and other places are starting to follow suit with cheaper offerings…

I think that the best place to find a deal is La Rosa’s. We always get the free kids meal coupons when they come out (6 free meals coupons for $1), and then we go and the kids eat for free, and my husband and I each get the small pizza/salad deal for $6.99. So we spend about $20 total (including drinks and tip) for a family of 4! You can’t beat that for a great meal, plus the kids feel like it’s a treat!
