Sports bar to open at former Grindstone Charley’s location in Kettering

KETTERING — More than 20 months after a Grindstone Charley’s closed at 4139 Wilmington Pike, a new restaurant and sports bar is poised to open in that location.

All Stars Sports N Wings is “shooting to open by next Friday,” Sept. 11, according to its general manager, Todd Hicks of Beavercreek. It will offer a sit-down restaurant service with an extensive menu of chicken wings, burgers, wraps, ribs, salads, pizza, pastas, and beef and seafood entrees, as well as 25 televisions for sports viewing, Hicks said. OSU fans can congregate in a separate “Buckeye Room” for games, he said.

Hicks was drawn to the location in part because he was a former customer of Grindstone Charley’s, the restaurant that opened there in 1994 and closed in January 2008, a victim of increased competition.

“I had a good experience here, and I think it’s a great area,” Hicks said. “I thought, why not open a restaurant here?”

Hicks estimated the new restaurant and sports bar will employ 35 people. The business “was inundated” with applications after it posted a “now hiring smiling faces” sign in front of the restaurant earlier this week, he said.

All Stars Sports N Wings will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. seven days a week. For more information, call (937) 299-1100.

Stopped in to watch NFL on Sunday. Poor TV management and far too expensive to watch a game.

I plan to stop in Sat. for the big OSU game - I pray they’ll be serving decent, craft beers on draft - not the usual Bud & Miller swill. If not, it will be a very SHORT visit…

I can’t wait to visit the new sports bar. Good Luck! As for the Duke issue: Defy a judge and get shutdown—should this be a surprise to anyone? Who put 30+ staff out of work? Arrogant owners owners who tried to see how far they could skirt an agreement. They had a restaurant, a dedicated staff, and an approved menu; why did they have to push it??? The judge is not the bad guy here.

Wonder what the Dayton Daily News would say about there fair speech if they weren’t allowed to write about certain restaurants, and yet they dictate to us who we can blog on. It is absolutely amazing that you can’t blog on Duke’s. Hopefully this restaurant will be able to serve what it wants. Rose, is way out of touch here. I think if the Dayton Daily News did their REAL research they would find out more of why this Judge should take his personal issues and deal with them outside the courtroom. Rose contributes to Dayton being the #1 in the country declining city. Yes #1 and he’s going to close a small little restaurant who wants to serve spaghetti and meatballs????

I can’t beleive the comments ablut BW#’s wing size. I have larger and less fat wings there 90% og the time. If I get small wings I let the manager on duty know about it. BW3’s has aleays gone out of there way to take care of the customer. We visit them at least 4 times a month and not the same location. We have been to Huber, Beavercreek, Kettering,West Carrolton, Brown Street, Englewood, Las Vegas, Phoniex, Sidney, Troy and many more. If not happy talk to them don’t put your BS out here.

what the heck? I posted that one on the sports bar thread, how did it get over here? anyways I hope this new place does well. wings and burgers is a good combo for a place to have in this day and age. fish and chips is good, stay away from the Italian dressing and the pasta, some goofy judge might shut you down

getting back on topic somewhat, I like to go to the Dublin Pub and watch the game, the food there is pretty good and it isn’t a cookie cutter sports bar

I second the motion that BW3’s has “itty-bitty” wings. I gave them another chance a couple weeks ago and I swear I was served cornish game hen wings. I hope these folks have better (bigger) wings. Good luck folks! It might be bad timing for this venture.

Amen to Bushong’s comments on the judge in Duke’s case. It’s a travesty what he’s doing to the (again out of work) employees and the owner.

A seperate Buckeye room? I am there! And for Buzz, if you want karaoke go to the Soft Rock Cafe, no food, but EXCELLENT karaoke 5 nights a week (not on Sundays or Mondays). Once you see their set-up you will never go anywhere else for karaoke!

Welcome to the neighborhood! I do hope you have fried green tomatos, no where else that I know of does. I am realy glad of the employment you are bringing to Kettering. I hope we can get more people in the area with more jobs to offer.

Sorry, but the restaurant is not reopening, the building is reopening as a different restaurant. If it was still Grindstone Charley’s, then the restaurant would be ‘reopening’.

I sure hope they find a great bartender like Chuck who was at Grindstones - the place started going to h when he left. And I hope they have karaoke again (same folks). That was one of our weekly fun things to do.

News articles are not supposed to be editorials, they are supposed to be objective reports on current and interesting situations. The DDN is doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing by reporting on what is going on and not putting their opinion in a news article. Thats what editorials are for. Some need to learn what journalism is actually supposed to be.

How in the world a JUDGE can dictate to a restaurant what they can have on the menu is NUTS. All restaurants change their menus and specials all of time. And, the old Duke’s had Italian dishes on their specials all of the time. This judge is out of control. Probably needs to have someone review him and see if he is still in command of reasoning.

I’m glad to see a new business go into that building. It’s always sad to see empty buildings in the neighborhood. We live within walking distance and will be in to support you. I hope it’s a success!

I think this is great! There may be a lot of “wing” places in the area, but they all have something a little different which makes it interesting to go to each one. I hope they do well. Actually, kinda tired of BW3’s itty bitty wings at astronomical prices!!!

Seems to work just fine, You are correct. This concept has worked. There are those of us that see it as tired and dated. Another dining concept might include nutritious food, relatively low caloric food, no televisions, and a requirement that gentlemen remove their hats, or at least not wear them backwards

Dukes- DDN editors practice self-censorship and will not criticize a local federal judge.Whatever you think of the Duke’s litigation, it’s a fair question whether the judge is abusing his discretion and putting 35-40 people out of work when he has much less onerous tools at his disposal, especially when it is a fight over salad dressing and pasta. This guy is appointed for life and if he is letting his personal feelings result in bad judgment in this case, what might he do in a more serious matter?DDN is really only party that can bring this to public’s attention, but I’m afraid they wont’ touch it.

Why are a lot of the people who comment always negative? This guy is bringing 35 jobs to the area, and people still have negative comments. You don’t have to order the wings and if you don’t like sports, stay home and Bill O’Reilly or Andy Griffith, or whatever makes you happy!
