Sonic seeks to reverse sagging sales
Check out this story from Nation’s Restaurant News entitled “Sonic outlines plan to reverse falling sales”.
The Sonics in the Dayton area are franchise restaurants, not corporate-owned, and sales in franchise restaurants nationwide were slightly better than the majority-corporate-owned stores, the NRN story says.
I can’t imagine any burger chains that operate in the Dayton area were too thrilled when both Smashburger and Five Guys Burgers and Fries chose Dayton as expansion sites last year. And now a new burger restaurant, EO Burgers, has opened at The Greene.
The Burgers Wars are heating up, and burger lovers certainly have plenty of choices.

I use to love Sonic Now you couldn’t pay me to go to one The food is bland and awful, not to mention in Xenia they can’t get an order right to save them. I have gone months between visits and I have yet to get what I ordered - how hard is it to get it w/o mayo? I have heard a lot of ppl complain abt the same thing so I know its not just me

When they first hit town, you could not get near them…traffic all jacked up etc. Now, both of them on Brandt in HH are ghost towns. They are a touch pricey, but the burgers are huge. Not bad. Also have had 5 guys a couple of times and now Smashburger. They are O.K. too. The best burger comes off the grill on my back deck though.

Sonic just plainly sucks in food quality, value, and geographically they oversaturated the burger market in Western Ohio. Here are a few stores that closed in the last year with only recently being opened with in 2008: Troy Piqua Celina Urbana Any More? It is likely more will fail in the near future.

The Wright State Sonic location is a traffic nightmare. You would have expected them to have put more thought into the location. Went to 5 guys burgers for lunch at 11:15 once and the line was across the room. I don’t know whether the food is that good or it was the novelty of a new place, but I went to Chipotle and never have tried to go back.

I know exactly what the problem is at Sonic. Price and quality. Their combos meals are priced about a dollar more than the equivalent at other places. And the quality of the food not as good as the competition. There is a Sonic just down the road from my house, but after getting lousy food there several times, I don’t stop there anymore.

Sonic could improve sales by improving their product. Scott it’s called nostalgia. In the 50’s and 60’s Americans did everything in the car. I have been told I was conceived in the car

I don’t understand the attraction of eating in the car. It is sort of a pain

Stan, remember that businesses are NOT altruistic ventures. Businesses exist to make money. A lot of restaurants don’t give free refills. Good luck in the future. You’re fired.

They wouldn’t give me a refill on my iced tea (I even went to the window and asked) so I never went back!!! No wonder their sales are flat! Who else doesn’t give free re-fills.

On the bright side, low-cost dining options should remain strong in a weak economy. People won’t spend as much on dinner these days. I think with Sonic there’s a certain learning curve for the public to know what’s different about it. On the other hand, Smashburger and Five Guys are pretty straight forward burger joints. I also think Sonic has not done a very good job choosing geographic locations in the region either.
