Wine takes center stage now that the turkey has been consumed
We hosted Thanksgiving dinner at our house for my wife’s family this year (12 total), and the brined bird from Dorothy Lane Market was again delicious. My wife makes fabulous turkey gravy. And the stuffing (well, dressing, since it was made outside the bird) recipe from Cook’s Illustrated went over well, too, although it’s a time-consuming one.
But enough of the past. With the holiday behind us, we turn our focus back to where it belongs: wine. (No, not shopping … ).

Beaujolais Nouveau highlights mid-week wine tastings
In France, the banners proclaim every third Thursday in November: “Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrive!” And it’s not so much different here on this side of the pond. Nearly all of the Miami Valley’s wine retailers are offering the first 2010 wines (of the northern hemisphere, anyway) for tasting on Thursday, and some will have the wines open all day. We have a winner: the results are IN for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo wine competition
The competition started with 1,789 wines and ended with one.
Well, there were other winners, yes, but the grand champion of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo 2011 “Rodeo Uncorked! International Wine Competition” held last weekend (Nov. 13-14, 2010) was the 2006 Cyrus, a Bordeaux-style blend from Alexander Valley Vineyards in Sonoma, California.
I served as a judge again this year for the Houston wine competition, and spent Saturday at the Reliant Center (the Houston Texans NFL team had an away game) alongside 70 or so other judges swirling, sniffing, sipping, spitting, and awarding medals to some of the 1,789 wines entered into the competition. The 15 panels of five judges each recommended the best of the best to enter into a final round of judging on Sunday, when a panel of about two dozen judges selected the top winners.
The Cyrus was my pick for top wine, and apparently many of the other judges were just as impressed as I was. It’s a blockbuster red, boasting a solid core of dark fruits and concentrated flavors, with touches of spice and earth to add complexity, all surrounded by just the right amount of tannin and acidity. The wine has a long life ahead of it. And, unlike some grand champions from this and other wine competitions, the ‘06 Cyrus IS available in Ohio, at a suggested retail price of $56.99, according to Pennie Haase, the national marketing director for Alexander Valley Vineyards.
Ironically — or perhaps serendipitously, for her — Haase traveled to Houston and served as one of the 70-plus judges for the event. But there was no “home cooking” — all wines were judged blind, with none of the judges knowing the identity of any of the 1,789 wines placed before them.

Dueling wine dinners & more on this amazing tastings list
L’Auberge and Carvers Steaks & Chops are both hosting very tantalizing wine dinners next Wednesday, Nov. 17, while Hawthorn Grill is hosting its very first wine dinner two days before, on Monday, Nov. 15.
Those are highlights of yet another stunning week of wine events in the Miami Valley, which are laid out in further detail here courtesy of a Dayton-based wine listserv.
But first, the dinners, starting with the Monday event at Hawthorn Grill on Stroop Road near Marshall Road in Kettering: I hope I’m not too late in letting you know about this one. The restaurant’s email says it wanted reservations by yesterday (Thursday Nov. 11), but perhaps it’s not too late, and if it is, ask to be put on their email list so you can be first to learn about the next wine dinner. The menu for the Monday event (seating at 6:30 p.m., first course served at 7 p.m.) includes Diver Caught Scallops with Spinach & Arugula Salad, Roasted Acorn Squash, Apple, Pomegranate and Portobello Mushrooms, served with 2007 Schloss Vollrad Riesling Kabinett; Pan Roasted Quail with Butternut Squash and Wild Mushroom Risotto, served with 2008 Wente Morning Fog Chardonnay; Sausage Stuffed Pork Loin with Mashed Parsnips, Haricots Verts and Maple Glazed Carrots, served with 2006 Cambria Julia’s Vineyard Pinot Noir; and Sweet Potato Tart with Maple Cream, Molten Chocolate Cake and Cinnamon Ice Cream served with Taylor Fladgate 10 Year Tawny Port. Then on Wednesday, Nov. 17, L’Auberge, 4120 Far Hills Ave., will host a wine dinner featuring the restaurant’s former general manager, Brian DeMarke, and the Washington State wines of Long Shadows Vintners, at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17. DeMarke left l’Auberge in May to take a job with the Mason-based wine importer and distributor Vintner Select, the distributor of Long Shadows wines. The wine-dinner menu will include Terrine of Hudson Valley Foie Gras; Bison Oxtail with Saffron Risotto and Truffle Sauce; Fricassee of Wild Pheasant with Red Caper Gnocchi and Oregon Chanterelle Mushrooms; Medallion of Canadian Venison with Red Cabbage and Sauce Grand Veneur; and Crepe Souffle. Each course will be served with one of the impressive wines of Long Shadows. The cost is $150, and reservations are required. For more information or to make reservations, call (937) 299-5536.
And on that same night, Carvers Steaks & Chops, 1535 Miamisburg-Centerville Road, will host a wine dinner featuring the wines of Chateau St. Jean at at 6:30 p.m. Wednesdsay, Nov. 17. The menu will include Alaskan Halibut Crusted with Almonds; Roasted Chicken Breast Glazed with Bourbon; Hand-Carved Filet Mignon with Garlic Parsley New Potatoes; and Mixed Berry Crostata With Grand Marnier Sabayon. Each course will be served with a wine from the Sonoma County winery. The cost is $60, plus tax and tip. Reservations are required. Boston’s Bistro & Pub shooting for ‘Most Arrogant’ three-peat
DAYTON — Boston’s Bistro & Pub will launch its week-long effort to sell the most Stone Brewing Co. Bastard Ales — and thus be crowned the “Most Arrogant Bar In America” — at midnight Friday, Nov. 12.
If Boston’s wins the competition by selling the most Stone Brewing Co. Arrogant Bastard ale, Oaked Bastard ale, and Double Bastard Ale between Nov. 13-19, it will be the third victory for the pub at 7500 N. Main St. Boston’s won in 2006 and 2008.
Two local charities are also benefitting from Boston’s Bistro & Pub’s “Most Arrogant” effort: 50 cents of every pint, or $1 of every pitcher, will go to Diabetes Dayton and the Miami Valley Astronomical Society, housed at Boonshoft Museum of Natural History.
The “launch party” at midnight Friday, Nov. 12 will feature live music. Monday night is chili night and Astronomical Society Night, with educational videos. Tuesday night will include a Dayton Gems meet-and-greet. A “Most Arrogant Stone Trivia Night” will be held Wednesday night. On Thursday, Boston’s will be the only bar in Ohio to release the Stone Brewing Co. Lucky Bastard Ale. on Friday, an “Over the Top” party is planned, with a bonfire, star gazing, and a drawing for prizes for those who purchase an “Arrogant Passport” for $1 and have it punched whenever they purchase an “Arrogant” ale.

Wine Loft at The Greene to start serving lunch, but not as soon as first announced
UPDATE: Jeff Van Horne, owner-operator of the Wine Loft, said plans for lunch service have been pushed back “a couple of weeks,” so look for it toward the end of November, not on Nov. 11 as originally announced.
The Wine Loft at The Greene in Beavercreek will start lunch service, Thursdays through Sundays only, starting this Thursday, Nov. 11, according to the wine bar’s owner-operator, Jeff Van Horne.
The Wine Loft opened in late 2009 and during its first year of existence opened at 4 p.m. daily. The wine bar will continue to open at 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, but will now open at 11 a.m. Thursday through Sunday.
The lunch menu will include paninis, salads, soups, and “several other Wine Loft favorites,” Van Horne said.

Wine Gallery, Coco’s highlight yet another amazing wine-tastings list
Don’t look now, but holiday-themed events are sneaking into this wine tastings and events list, which as always comes to Uncorked via the heroic efforts of the Dayton-based wine listserv that compiles it.
A highlight sure appears to be the Wine Gallery and Cafe anniversary tasting from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10 in downtown Dayton. Looks like the Gallery is offering a gaggle of wines to sample.
And here’s an event NOT on the list, and it’s on the same night as the Wine Gallery event, not too far away: Coco’s Bistro will host what it calls its 30 for $30 event from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10.
