For those of you going to today’s Fleurs et Vin — and you really should, since the weather forecast has turned favorable and the weather radar is clean as a whistle as of Sunday morning — be sure to check out a Kentucky winery with local ties that will making its Fleurs debut: Baker-Bird Winery located in Augusta, Ky. just on the other side of the mighty Ohio River southeast of Cincinnati.
Dinah Bird lived in the Dayton area for 25 years, and now oversees one of the most historic wineries in America. It is one of only 22 wineries on the National Registry of Historic Places, and it’s the ONLY winery in America that survived a Civil War battle, according to Bird.
Baker-Bird Winery joins our friends the Palomars, owners of Veleta Winery as the only two specific wineries serving wines under their own listings today in the official Fleurs et Vin wine guide.
Anybody else getting thirsty? See you at Carillon Park this afternoon.

Local wine news

Anheuser-Busch officials announced this morning that it has reached an agreement with C&G Distributing Co. in Lima to purchase the beer distributorship, according to a news release from the brewing company.
The Cecala and Guagenti families have owned and operated C&G for more than 60 years, and since 1967, the Lima distributor has been selling Anheuser-Busch products in a nine-county area in west-central Ohio.
Legislation approved and signed into law by Gov. John Kasich earlier this month will block beer makers such as Anheuser-Busch from purchasing beer distributorships, but that law does not take effect until July 29. Anheuser-Busch already owns a Canton-area beer distributorship and had opposed that portion of the bill.
Kevin Feehan, Anheuser-Busch’s regional sales vice president, said in a news release that the purchase of C&G “reinforces our commitment to providing local retailers with exemplary service and consumers with a broad portfolio of brands and unique beers to enjoy.
“For more than 100 years, Anheuser-Busch has been dedicated to adding value to, and providing competition in, the wholesale tier. We look forward to growing our brands and enhancing competition in this market, which will benefit west-central Ohio retailers and consumers.”
Anheuser-Busch has operated a brewery in Columbus for about 40 years and employs a combined 800 at the brewery and the Canton distributorship.

MIAMI TWP., Montgomery County — A new entertainment destination that offers wine and beer by the glass in conjunction with hands-on painting classes is scheduled to open in mid-July in front of the Dayton Mall.
Pinot’s Palette, a franchise shop of a Houston-based “paint-and-sip” company that operates more than 30 such shops in the U.S., will open at 2826 Miamisburg-Centerville Road adjacent to First Watch and Halloween Express in a retail building in front of the Dayton Mall.
The shop will be managed by Erica Doggett of West Carrollton, who said she and her in-laws — Dale and Karen Doggett, the franchise owner-operators — researched several paint-and-sip franchise opportunities before choosing Pinot’s Palette.
A similar painting-studio-and-wine-bar business, Raise Your Brush, opened in Centerville January 2013. And another similar shop called Paint By The Glass is located at 8179 Princeton-Glendale Road in West Chester.
Erica Doggett said the paint-and-sip industry has been accelerating nationwide, and her goal is to open two more locations of Pinot’s Palette — one in Beavercreek near the Mall at Fairfield Commons and one in the Huber Heights area — within the next two years.
Pinot’s Palette will offer a destination for those interested in a “girls night out,” a date night and private events. Art instructors offer step-by-step instructions on creating a painting in a relaxed atmosphere that is suitable for those who have never painted before, Doggett said. The beverage emphasis will be on wine and beer, although cocktails also will be available, and will be offered during special theme nights, she said. Alcohol-free kids’ nights also will be offered.
For more information, call (937) 432-9481 or check out the Pinot’s Palette Miamisburg Facebook Page.

MIAMISBURG — The former Peerless Mill restaurant building will become the Star City Brewing Company, a microbrewery and tasting room slated to open perhaps as early as this fall.
The microbrewery is the brainchild of co-owners and Miamisburg natives Brian and Justin Kohnen and third co-owner Brian Yavorsky, who is a former college friend and current business partner of Justin Kohnen’s. Yavorsky said the trio is buying the former Peerless Mill from Paul Music, a real estate broker for Big Valley Realty in Springboro, who bought the historic former restaurant at 319 S. Second St. in late 2011 and announced plans to restore the facility and reopen it as the Peerless Mill restaurant.
Those plans stalled in recent months. Music told the Dayton Daily News in August 2012 that the condition of the 14,000-square-foot building was worse than first thought.
The Peerless Mill served meals to generations of Miami Valley residents, operating for nearly eight decades before closing in 2008.
The Peerless Mill began in 1828 as a sawmill on the Miami & Erie Canal and became a restaurant in 1929.
Star City Brewing becomes the 11th brewery or brewpub in various stages of development in the Dayton area. Two — the Dayton Beer Co. in Kettering and the Yellow Springs Brewery — have opened.
All three of the owners have been avid home-brewers for several years. They decided to look for a location to open a microbrewery and “fell in love with the Peerless Mill Inn” after touring it, Yavorsky said.
“The Peerless Mill’s iconic status in Miamisburg’s history seemed to be a good fit with what we were trying to achieve,” Yavorsky said. The owners are planning several historical touches, including a historical display about the building.
Katie Frank, downtown development coordinator for the city of Miamisburg, said the brewery is a double-win for the city. Star City will breathe new life into a property that is an important part of the city’s history, and will become a cornerstone in Miamisburg’s development efforts downtown, which are tied to the Great Miami River, its bike path and the active-lifestyle businesses that are operating in the city’s downtown.
Yavorsky said plans call for a microbrewery and tasting room, which will offer four flagship beers and one seasonal brew, to open this fall. He called the projected timeline “aggressive” but said much of the interior renovation is complete, and brewing equipment has been ordered.
Star City’s owners have long-term plans to restore the former restaurant’s kitchens to supply food to pair with the beers. But the brewery will open with limited snacks, and will serve its brews in sample-size glasses, pint glasses or growlers to go.
Yavorsky said he realizes he is entering an increasingly crowded microbrewery market, but predicted the region’s brewers will be more collaborative than competitive. He foresees the possibility of a “Bourbon Trail”-type attraction that could draw beer enthusiasts to visit multiple breweries in the area. He also will offer kegs to bars and restaurants in the Miamisburg and broader Dayton areas.
